For SATB chorus with baritone and alto solos, trumpet, and piano.
My mother, Barbara Driskell, was pianist in the Southern Baptist Church we attended during my years growing up in Independence, Missouri. An excellent sight-reader and lover of classical music, she could also improvise very well and really gave our hymn-singing a soulful gospel “feel.” With her playing style in mind, I decided to try my hand at creating a gospel rendition of the spiritual “I Got Shoes.” It was such an immense challenge for me that I likely will not try gospel writing again for awhile, if ever. But, this one is lovingly dedicated to my mom. Feel free to clap along. Just remember: friends don’t let friends clap on 1 and 3!
